Obituary for Rose Surenian

Rose Surenian passed away peacefully in her home in Wall Township, New Jersey on May 22, 2023, surrounded by her husband, Darius, her son, Jeff, and her caretaker, Silva shortly after two long zoom sessions with her children and grandchildren. All expressed their overwhelming love before she took her last breath. She was almost 99 years old. She was born and raised in Fitchburg Massachusetts and moved to Watertown, Massachusetts when she was 16 to work at Watertown Arsenal making airplane parts for our Air Force in World War II. After that, she worked with her best friend, Alice Safoyan as a hairdresser, who introduced her to Darius Surenian, who became her devoted husband of almost 73 years. She raised her family in Randolph New Jersey where she lived for 40 years and was active in Saint Vartananz Armenian Church before moving to the Jersey Shore 25 years ago where she attended Saint Stepanos Armenian Apostolic Church. She was a phenomenal cook; enjoyed China painting and traveling all over the world with her husband.

She was the last living member of a generation of the Parechanian family. Her parents, Mimizar and Setrak, her sisters, Betty, Sarah and Mary, and her brother, Jimmy, all predeceased her. Her granddaughter, Lily, has also predeceased her. She has three living children, Gregory, Jeffrey married to Sharena, and Sandra married to John Hyland. She has 6 living grandchildren: Emma, Theodore and Benjamin (Greg’s children); Laura and Sherri (Jeff’s and Sharena’s children) and Catherine (Sandra’s and John’s daughter). Laura is married to Ryan Nelson, who have two children, Isabella and Mia – Rose’s great grandchildren. Catherine is married to Cutter Sydnor. The parents of Catherine, Emma, Sherri and Isabella gave their daughters the middle name of Rose in honor of their loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her caretaker, Silva, took great care of her along with her husband, Darius during her three-year struggle with dementia.

The surviving members of Rose’s family include Mary’s children, Richard, Ronny and Kenny and their children; Betty’s daughter, Jackie Roberts and her children; Sarah’s children, Georgia Lee, Mary Elizabeth and Carl and their children; and Jim’s children, Vincent and Becky. In addition, Nishan, Mary’s son, and Junie, Betty’s daughter, are deceased. However, Nishan’s sons and Junie’s daughter, Jackie, are surviving.

The family will have a viewing on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 between 5 and 8 pm at Saint Stepanos Armenian Church, located on 1184 Ocean Avenue, Long Branch, New Jersey. The church will hold a funeral service on Wednesday, May 31st at 10 am at Saint Stepanos. Burial service will be held immediately following the church service at Greenwood Cemetery, 707 Schoolhouse Road, Brielle, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Rose Surenian to Saint Stepanos Church.
