Mary L. Burne, 90, of Sea Girt, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, November 11, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born and raised in E. Orange but has been a resident of Wall Township for over 65 years. She was a graduate of E. Orange High School, and after high school she attended Berkeley Secretarial School. Mary started her career as a realtor in 1963, working for James P. Martin agency, Spring Lake, Frances Giblin Weiser Agency, Avon, John Garrabrant Agency, Wall Township, Sheldon Gross Realty, Wall Township, Katherine Matthews Reality, Sea Girt, and Caldwell Banker, Wall. She was an active member of the Wall Township community. She was the first woman appointed to the Wall Township Board of Adjustment, Wall Township Planning Board, she served four terms on the township committee, Wall Township Mayor three times, 1998, 2003, and 2006. She not only gave her time to Wall Township but also served on the Monmouth County Planning Board for eight years and served as the commissioner of the South Monmouth Regional Sewerage Authority. Mary was also past president of the Central School PTA, past president of the Wall High School Boosters, and lifetime member of the National PTA from West Belmar School. She was also a member of the Wall Township Environmental Advisory Committee, where she received numerous awards recognizing her contributions to helping our environment. A proud member of the Pride of Wall Seniors. Professionally Mary served as President of the South Monmouth Board of Realtors, and past Director of the New Jersey Association of Realtors. Mary would do a ride along with the Wall Police Department when it involved domestic violence cases. Even though Mary had worn many hats during her lifetime she was most importantly a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Martin Burne in 2013, her parents Pompeo and Angela DeMartinis. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law Mary and Douglas Birdsall of Sea Girt. Mary was the cherished grandmother of Anna Aschenbach and her husband Michael with whom she lived with, and Martin Birdsall and his wife Danielle, as well as 2 great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday November 17, 2023, at 11:30 am at St Denis Church, Manasquan, NJ.
