Obituary for James B. Moran
James Boyan Moran, 78, of Normandy Beach, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Bronxville, New York on November 13,1943. He was the second of three children born to Catherine (nee Boyan) Moran and William Charles Moran. Soon after Jim was born, the family moved to New Providence, NJ. Jim attended St. Teresa’s Grammar School, the Delbarton School (class of 1961) and Lehigh University (class of 1965), where he earned his B.A. and was a member of Sigma Phi Fraternity. It was during Jim’s junior year that he met his wife Jane, a nursing student, on a blind date. After graduating from Lehigh, Jim attended Seton Hall Law School and graduated with his J.D. in 1968.
After graduating from Seton Hall, Jim was a law clerk to The Honorable Gerald Foley, JAD. In 1970 he joined the firm Pindar, McElroy, Connell, Foley and Geiser in Newark, NJ. In 1977, Jim, became a founding partner of the firm Hoagland, Longo, Moran, Dunst and Doukas in New Brunswick, NJ. Jim was dedicated to the law, loved litigation, and took particular pride in mentoring young associates. Over the course of his career, Jim was the recipient of the New Jersey Bar Association Award for Distinction as a Trial Lawyer and the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey Award for Professionalism and Ethics.
Jim spent much of his youth vacationing at the New Jersey Shore, and in 1960 his parents bought a house in Normandy Beach. In 1980, Jim and Jane purchased their own home in the small beach town and spent summers there until moving “down” year round in 1994. A sailor, Jim was happiest on a boat, even if it meant waiting for the tide to change after running aground once again in Barnegat Bay. Jim was a member Normandy Beach Yacht Club (NBYC). He raced in the Auxiliary Class in the Sunday Series Races and served as Commodore in 2005.
An active volunteer, Jim served on the Town Planning Board in Montgomery, NJ, acted as volunteer counsel for the Normandy Beach Improvement Association, and NBYC and was a member of the board of Middlesex County Catholic Charities. He was also a member of the board of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, in Asbury Park.
Jim had a vast network of friends from high school, college and the towns where he and Jane lived over the course of their marriage (Warren, NJ, Chatham, NJ, Piscataway, NJ and Princeton, NJ). He loved to meet new people and hear their stories. He made people feel welcome and was generous with his time. He was always happy to share a joke, a story and a glass (or two) of wine with friends. Over the course of their marriage, Jim and Jane traveled extensively. Notable trips included many visits to Ireland and England to visit family and friends, and frequent trips to Barbados and other southern destinations for warm weather and more fun with friends.
Married in 1967, Jim and Jane (ne Clarke) were devoted to each other for 55 years and were blessed with four daughters, Kathleen Huntley-Robertson (Andrew), Mollie Sheppard (Robert), Brigid Smircich (A.J.) and Maggie Moran. He was immensely proud of the accomplishments of his daughters and grandchildren, Anna Huntley- Robertson, Grace Sheppard, Will Huntley-Robertson, Simon Sheppard, Liv Huntley-Roberson and Peter Huntley- Robertson. He is also survived by his siblings, William Moran and Katie Moran. In support of his daughters and grandchildren, he was an attendee of countless athletic events and school plays and performances, and could be heard shouting (at all events) words of encouragement. Jim and Jane created a home filled with love and laughter where their family and friends were always welcomed with open arms and an offer to be taken on a boat ride. He will be greatly missed.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, from 4-8 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ 08736. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at Church of Sacred Heart, 751 Main Street, Bay Head, NJ 08742.
