Obituary for Christine Mutch (Whalen)

“I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” (Etienne de Grellet)

This quote aptly depicts the exceptional life that Christine W. Mutch lived. One filled with extreme care, love and generosity for others.

Christine W. Mutch, 71, of Brielle, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a short and courageous battle with Glioblastoma . Her life began in Philadelphia on October 14, 1951. She was born to Charles V. Whalen Jr. and Harriett Brazelton Whalen. Her family later relocated to Middletown, New Jersey in 1956. She attended Mater Dei High School in New Monmouth, NJ, graduating in 1969.

In 1971, Christine met the love of her life, Edward (Ed) James Mutch III. They married in 1973. They lived in Monmouth Beach, NJ until 1979. They welcomed their only child, Edward Charles Mutch, in 1979. Christine loved her son dearly. He brought her more joy than she could have imagined. The family later relocated to Brielle, NJ where they settled in the home they currently have today. She built a wonderful life in the community of Brielle.

Christine had twenty years of dedicated service as a Sales Associate in the local real estate market. Through this position she gained many lifelong friends.

Christine was a very loving, warm, and welcoming soul. People always gravitated to her. Because she was an amazing listener, many people loved to sit and talk with her. She didn’t have a mean word to say about anyone. She was a truly genuine individual. Because of this great characteristic, Christine made and maintained many friendships over the years from all walks of life.

Christine was a woman of strong faith. It is because of this faith and through the community of her church, St. Denis Church in Manasquan, NJ, that her charitable nature evolved. She selflessly extended herself, her services and resources to anyone who needed them. She volunteered for St. Vincent De Paul and The Center in Asbury Park. She worked in the food pantry, did home deliveries, as well as coordinated financial assistance to anyone in need. She also served as Vice Regent and then subsequently as Regent for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, through the Church of St. Denis. In that position, she spearheaded programs to help raise money for charity.

Christine loved her family. Her family was her core, her life. She enjoyed many trips with her family. Over the years Christine and her husband, Ed, traveled both as a family of three and then as empty nesters. She thoroughly enjoyed every bit of their adventures together. One of her favorite spots was the Manasquan Inlet where she and Ed enjoyed walks and going to the beach. She really loved the beach. From a little girl going to the beaches in Sea Bright with her family, to moving to Brielle with her husband and being near to Manasquan Beach, her love for the beach never waned. She also loved spending time in the summer in North Wildwood, NJ with her Philadelphia relatives. Christine’s life grew more exciting and became filled with renewed pleasure as their family grew and she welcomed the births of each of her grandchildren. She doted on them. She always became especially excited when she knew they were coming for a visit. She loved taking them to the Manasquan Arcade, seeing their little faces of wonder and excitement as they racked up tickets for prizes. They brought her an extreme amount of joy.

Aside from her travels and her love of the beach, Christine also had some special pastimes. She enjoyed reading, walks and times when she could just indulge in her favorite treat, strawberry licorice. She was a big fan of it.

She lived a wonderful and full life worthy of honor and celebration. She lived a life rich with kindness and selfless generosity. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was deeply loved and will be truly missed.

She was predeceased by her father, Charles V. Whalen Jr, her mother, Harriett Brazelton Whalen and her brother, Charles V. Whalen III.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Edward James Mutch III; son, Edward Charles Mutch of Watchung and her daughter-in-law, Jillian Mutch; two grandchildren, Eddie (11) and Frankie (8); her sister, Louise C. Whalen; and a host of other loved ones and friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ 08736.
