Obituary for Barbara A. Powers (Straus)

Barbara A. Powers, 87, of Wall Township passed away at home on Wednesday, February 15. Barbara was born and raised in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from St. Brendan’s High School in Brooklyn and worked in business in New York City. Later, she worked for many years as an attendance clerk at Matawan Regional High School.

Barbara met the love of her life, Tom Powers, on the beach at Jacob Riis Park in Queens. They were married in 1958 and lived in Brooklyn before moving with their growing family to Aberdeen (then Matawan) Township in 1962. After raising their six children, Tom and Barbara moved to Wall Township in 1993. Barbara loved spending time at the beach and was a devoted fan of the New York Mets and Duke basketball.

Barbara is predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom Powers, parents Milton (Jack) and May Straus, her brother, Jackie Straus, sister Marilyn Walsh, and two sons-in-law Joseph Lyttle and Robert Handy. She is survived by her sister Claire Byrnes of Middletown as well as her children and their spouses John (Tammy) Powers of Aberdeen, Barbara Lyttle of Point Pleasant, Mary Handy of Belmar, Thomas (Susan) Powers of Freehold, Jennifer (Michael) Hastings of Pennington and James (Tracy) Powers of Wall. She is also survived by her 18 cherished grandchildren Catherine, Joseph, Erin, Connor, Caitlin, Meghan, Robert, Ryan, Hayley, Patrick, Sean, Brianne, Emma, Jack, Sam, Tanner, Riley and Devaney, as well as great-grandsons Shane and Cameron.

The family extends a special thanks to her caregiver Patricia Afrane and the nurses and staff of the VNA Health and Hospice who cared for our Mom in her final days.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, February 20, 2023 from 3-7 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ 08736. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 10:30 am at St Catharine’s Church, 215 Essex Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ 08762. Interment will follow at St. Anne's Cemetery, 1610 Allenwood Road, Wall, NJ 07719.
